ADNEC’s Capital Gate achieves Guinness record for ‘World’s Furthest Leaning Manmade Tower’

ADNEC’s Capital Gate achieves Guinness record for ‘World’s Furthest Leaning Manmade Tower’

Abu Dhabi, 05 June 2010: CAPITAL GATE, owned and developed in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, by ADNEC (Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company), has been certified as the ‘World’s Furthest Leaning Manmade Tower,’ by Guinness World Records.

CAPITAL GATE (www.capitalgate.ae) has been built to lean 18 degrees westwards - more than four times that of the world famous Leaning Tower of Pisa – and, earned the Guinness recognition after rigorous evaluation by the Awards Committee since January 2010, when the exterior of the 160-metre (524.9 ft), 35-storey tower was completed.

Commenting on CAPITAL GATE’s record-breaking achievement, His Excellency Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, ADNEC’s Chairman said: “CAPITAL GATE is a landmark development for Abu Dhabi and with this recognition the tower takes its place among the world’s great buildings. It is a signature building which speaks to the fore-sight of the emirate”.

CAPITAL GATE’s floor plates are stacked vertically up to the 12th storey after which, they are staggered over each other by between 300mm to 1400mm giving rise to the tower’s dramatic lean.

The tower features other innovative construction techniques including the world’s first known use of a ‘pre-cambered’ core, which contains more than 15,000 cubic metres of concrete reinforced with 10,000 tons of steel. The core, deliberately built slightly off centre, has straightened as the building has risen, compressing the concrete and giving it strength, and moving into (vertical) position as the weight of the floors has been added.

“CAPITAL GATE has been a true design-and-build project from the very start. There have been numerous challenges, which I am pleased to say we have surmounted thanks to a structured partnering programme and the hard work and commitment of everyone involved. Both ADNEC and our partners have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to create an iconic structure which is not only distinctive in appearance but also extremely functional,” said His Excellency Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, ADNEC’s Managing Director.

When fully complete by the end of this year, CAPITAL GATE will house the 5-star Hyatt Capital Gate hotel as well as approximately 20,000sqm of premium office space.

Peter Fulton, Managing Director, Hyatt International, South West Asia commented, “This is indeed a proud day for all of us involved with CAPITAL GATE. We are fortunate to have been given the opportunity to showcase our hotel in one of the Middle East’s most significant developments. Along with our partners at ADNEC, we hope to be able to offer a unique and authentic guest experience that will complement this iconic structure, making it the preferred address in Abu Dhabi for the discerning traveller.”

CAPITAL GATE was designed by international architecture firm RMJM and is adjacent to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre within ADNEC’s Capital Centre.

“RMJM has a 40 year history of designing and delivering world class buildings in the Middle East. The award of this world record substantiates this and puts both CAPITAL GATE and Abu Dhabi firmly on the world stage, and at the cutting edge of global architecture. RMJM are delighted to have been instrumental in this pioneering achievement,” said Nick Haston, RMJM Middle East CEO

Besides CAPITAL GATE’S gravity-defying lean and its pre-cambered core, the tower has several other elements that enhance its reputation as one of the world’s most distinctive projects:
• Each room is different as is each pane of façade glass and every interior angle.
• CAPITAL GATE’s shell comprises a super-strong exo-skeleton called the diagrid that carries all the weight of the floors while also providing an unobstructed floor plate precluding the need for pillars or internal beams. Other high-profile buildings that use diagrid technology include New York’s Hearst Tower, the Swiss Re building (‘The Gherkin’) in London and Beijing’s CCTV tower.
• CAPITAL GATE’s double-glazed façade achieves greater energy efficiency with waste air being pre-cooled between the inner and outer façades, before being expelled.
• The tower’s façade glass is of low emissivity and is the first time it has been used in the UAE. It keeps the building’s interior cool and eliminates glare, while maintaining transparency.
• The distinctive stainless steel ‘splash’ that descends from the 19th floor, is a design element and a shading device that eliminates over 30 percent of the sun’s heat before it reaches the building. The splash also twists around the building towards the south to shield the tower as much as possible from direct sunlight.
• CAPITAL GATE’s 19th storey outdoor swimming pool has an unrivalled panoramic view.
• A cantilevered tea lounge overhangs the tower’s exterior, 80m above the ground.
• CAPITAL GATE also has an internal diagrid that has been used to create a tapered, 60m high atrium.
• The tower’s foundation is a dense mesh of reinforced steel above 490 piles, drilled 20 - 30 meters underground.

CAPITAL GATE’s status as one of the world’s most complex engineering projects has been further endorsed by a recent exclusive National Geographic television documentary. The ‘Megastructures’ programme devoted to the project – ‘The Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi’ - has been translated into 44 languages and will be broadcast in 166 countries reaching a potential audience of 200 million viewers. ‘The Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi’ is due to air in the Middle East next month.

Abu Dhabi:Capital Gate reaches 100m height

Capital Gate reaches 100m height

Floors 17 and 18 to house gigantic suspended Atrium

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) has announced that it has achieved one of the most significant milestones in the construction of the iconic Capital Gate, adjacent to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. A gigantic internal Atrium, including swimming pool and ‘tea lounge’ has been suspended on the 17th and 18th floors, the halfway point of the 35 storey, 160 metre high tower. The tower now stands approximately 100m high with the central core at level 22 and the external diagrid at level 18.

When complete Capital Gate will lean an astonishing 18 degrees westward, 14 degrees more than the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. By installing a huge number of steel struts, engineers have realised ADNEC’s and project architect’s (RMJM) vision of the Atrium - creating a cantilevered “tea lounge” and swimming pool suspended 80 metres above the ground at level 18.

Because of its unique posture, the 35 storey Capital Gate is being constructed on top of a 2m deep concrete raft with an incredibly dense mesh of reinforced steel. The extraordinary steel exoskeleton known as the “diagrid” sits above an extensive distribution of 490 piles that have been drilled 30 metres underground to accommodate the gravitational, wind and seismic pressures. The design of the central core, which slants in opposite direction to the lean of the building, straightening as it grows, has never been attempted before.

Commenting on Capital Gate’s progress, Simon Horgan, ADNEC Group CEO, said: “When complete Capital Gate will be a modern day icon for Abu Dhabi, recognisable throughout the world. Capital Gate is not about being the biggest or the tallest, it is about advanced technical ingenuity and aesthetic splendour. This is one of the most challenging buildings under construction in the world at the moment but due to the partnership between ADNEC, RMJM and all contractors on the project, ground breaking solutions are being designed on a daily basis.”

Tony Archibold, RMJM Project Director, added: “Passing the half-way point in development is a great success and we are now entering a critical period in Capital Gate’s development. While we are facing some of our toughest architectural challenges, it is also the beginning of the most exciting stage; where this unique structure begins to take shape.”

Capital Gate will house Abu Dhabi’s first Hyatt hotel – Hyatt at Capital Centre, a presidential style luxury 5 star hotel which will provide 200 hotel rooms for Abu Dhabi and will serve ADNEC’s visitors and exhibitors as well as international business and leisure travellers.

Capital Gate

Capital Gate, when completed, will lean an incredible 18 degrees (14 degrees more than the famous leaning tower of Pisa). It is being developed by Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) and has been designed by global architects RMJM. Capital Gate forms the centre piece of the Capital Centre development, an AED8 billion (£1.5 billion) business and residential micro city being constructed around the thriving Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

Future Commercial & Retail Development Award 2009

Abu Dhabi’s new signature tower believed to be ‘World’s Most Inclined’ is recognised as top MENA project

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company’s (ADNEC) Capital Gate tower project has won the prestigious 2009 Cityscape Middle East Commercial and Retail Development ‘Future’ of the Year Award, beating other key projects in the MENA region.

ADNEC representatives accepted the award during a special Awards Gala Dinner hosted by Cityscape Abu Dhabi (Sunday, April 19, 2009) at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Capital Gate received exceptionally high marks for criteria which included contribution to world architecture, culture, invention and imagination, respect for people, the planet, environmental awareness, and appropriateness in the MENA region.

Commenting on the award, Simon Horgan, ADNEC CEO said, “The Middle East real estate industry has recognised Capital Gate as a modern day icon for the region. This award is a tribute to the government’s support throughout the design and development of Capital Gate. It also acknowledges the dedication of the development team and partners. Capital Gate will honour the past and celebrate the future, providing Abu Dhabi with one of the world’s greatest commercial mega structures.”

Upon completion, the 160-metre, 35-storey tall Capital Gate will be an iconic ‘gateway’ into Abu Dhabi, reflecting the national identity and values of the country through its unique past and futuristic design. The tower will be connected to the historic Grandstand of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and form a vital part of the AED 8 billion Capital Centre development, the world’s first exhibition lifestyle destination. The structure will offer 20,000 sqm of exclusive office space and be home to the 5-star “Hyatt at Capital Centre” - Hyatt Hotels and Resorts’ first hotel in Abu Dhabi.

Capital Gate’s distinctive 18-degree westward incline, was made possible through the use of an innovative “slanting core” concept never before used in other developments. As construction continues, ADNEC and RMJM architects have jointly submitted an application to the Guinness Book of World Records to be recognised as the ‘World’s Most Inclined Tower.’

The 2009 Cityscape Middle East Real Estate Awards is part of the 3rd Cityscape Abu Dhabi international real estate investment and development event running from April 19 to 22, 2009 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

Cityscape Abu Dhabi returns to Abu Dhabi, over 30% bigger than last year

Cityscape Abu Dhabi returns to Abu Dhabi, over 30% bigger than last year
3rd edition of the show confirms the success of ADNEC

The Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) will see Cityscape Abu Dhabi return for its largest ever edition from 19th – 22nd April. This year’s event will be 32% bigger than the 2008 edition and will cover a gross area of more than 38,000sqm.

Since its launch in 2007, Cityscape Abu Dhabi has shown significant growth year on year. This growth will continue this year due to the expansion of ADNEC’s exhibition facilities to create the Gulf’s largest exhibition centre. Six additional exhibition halls have been added to the venue since the 2008 edition of the Cityscape Abu Dhabi enabling the event to span 9 exhibition halls, plus the Atrium.

Cityscape Abu Dhabi is one of many exhibitions at ADNEC to return to Abu Dhabi annually. This signifies the success that the capital is having in retaining its events and confirms ADNEC’s growing status as a powerful economic engine for the emirate. In addition to Cityscape Abu Dhabi, ADNEC will stage a huge number of events in 2009, over 50% of which are returning events.

Simon Horgan, ADNEC CEO said: “One of the main reasons why ADNEC was created was to attract new events to the capital and to then support their growth. Since the venue opened in 2007 we have been committed to helping organisers make their events more successful each season. Cityscape Abu Dhabi is a perfect example of an event which has been able to grow due to the support which ADNEC gives.”

Rohan Marwaha, Managing Director, Cityscape, IIR Exhibitions added: “The support of ADNEC has been instrumental in the success of Cityscape Abu Dhabi. The 2009 edition of the event will be the largest Cityscape Abu Dhabi that we’ve held, and we’re expecting to see a significant increase in visitors and investors coming from all over the world to Abu Dhabi.”
